Homeopathy and Digestive Complaints

Thirty-eight million Americans are victims of digestive disorders, including Crohn’s disease, ulcerative colitis, diverticulitis, celiac disease, IBS, constipation, diarrhea, GERD, candida and food allergies. - That's more than the number affected by AIDS, cancer and heart disease… combined.

Digestive problems can encompass everything from hemorrhoids to colon cancer, and they appear to be occurring with increasing frequency today (and at an earlier age), while many of them were almost unheard of in our grandparents’ times.

The digestive system is regarded by many as the root of all health. It’s where you get nutrition for every cell in your body, including support for your immune system. If it is irritated, inflamed or constipated, it cannot do its job, and your health will steadily decline as a result. Problems with the gut have been linked to a wide variety of concomitant problems, and there is evidence to show they can cause or contribute to conditions such as asthma, eczema, allergies, behavioural problems (including autism and ADHD) and a generally weakened immune system.

The underlying cause is often poor nutrition on some level (sometimes due to food intolerances), which leads in time to imbalances in the intestinal microflora ("good bacteria") of the gut. The conventional high-carb Western diet, heavy on sugars and processed foods, is really a formula for developing digestive problems. Another contributing factor is the use of antibiotics, which attack bacteria indiscriminately throughout the body (including the gut), and cause further imbalances in intestinal flora. In fact, recent studies have shown that the repeated use of antibiotics during the first year of life can increase the risk of the child developing asthma and allergies, as the intestinal microflora play a vital role in developing a child's immune system.

How can Homeopathy help?

Homeopathy can be extremely beneficial in cases of digestive disturbance, in part because it takes a holistic, or "whole body" approach. This means that digestive symptoms are not looked at and treated in isolation, but rather connections and relationships between different body systems, such as bowel function and mood/temperament, play a vital role in choosing the correct remedy. Therefore, homeopathy recognises the central role of the digestive system in creating a healthy, functioning overall state of being and treats conditions accordingly.

Homeopathy is also particularly useful for treating digestive disturbances because it does not use toxic drugs, which often have their own undesirable side effects and can cause as many problems as they cure, particularly when it comes to the gut and its delicate balance of microflora. Instead, homeopathically prepared remedies act on your body as a trigger for it to begin healing and correcting itself, therefore treating the underlying cause of the problem rather than merely controlling the presenting symptoms.
